Thirteenth Amendment Ratified

On January 31, 1865, the U.S. Congress passed the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, formally abolishing slavery throughout the United States. This landmark amendment declared that "neither slavery nor involuntary servitude" shall exist within the nation.

Jackie Robinson Born

Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born on January 31, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia. He would go on to break Major League Baseball's color barrier when he debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947, becoming one of the most significant figures in American sports history.
