Wilma Mankiller Inaugurated as Cherokee Chief

On February 28, 1899, John Merrick, Aaron Moore, and Charles Clinton Spaulding incorporated North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company in Durham. It became the largest Black-owned business in the United States and helped build Durham's prosperous Black community known as "Black Wall Street of the South."
