November 11, 1831

Nat Turner's Rebellion

In August 1831, Nat Turner led a slave uprising that killed approximately 55 white people before being suppressed. Turner eluded capture for two months. The rebellion struck fear into slaveholders and led to harsher slave codes across the South. Turner was captured on October 30 and executed on November 11, 1831.

Daisy Bates Born

Born November 11, 1914, Daisy Bates and her husband L.C. Bates published the Arkansas State Press newspaper. She served as president of the Arkansas NAACP and was the key adult advisor to the nine students who integrated Central High School in Little Rock in 1957.

Angola Gains Independence

On November 11, 1975, Angola declared independence from Portugal. The liberation struggle, led by the MPLA, FNLA, and UNITA, was part of the broader wave of African decolonization. Agostinho Neto became the first president.
