Kwame Ture Born

Born June 29, 1941, Stokely Carmichael immigrated to the U.S. at age 11. He became chairman of SNCC and during the 1966 March Against Fear, he electrified the crowd with the call for "Black Power." He later changed his name to Kwame Ture and moved to Guinea.

Wilmington Insurrection

White supremacists overthrew the elected government of Wilmington, North Carolina, leading to violence and the deaths of many African Americans.
