Toussaint Louverture Dies

On April 7, 1803, Toussaint Louverture died in Fort de Joux prison in the French Alps, where he had been imprisoned by Napoleon. Before his death, he declared: "In overthrowing me, you have done no more than cut down the trunk of the tree of Black liberty in St. Domingue. It will spring back from the roots."
