November 2, 1800

Nat Turner Born

On November 2, 1800, Nat Turner was born into slavery in Southampton County, Virginia. In 1831, he led a rebellion of enslaved people that killed approximately 55 white people before being suppressed. The rebellion sent shockwaves through the slaveholding South and led to harsher slave codes, but also galvanized the abolitionist movement.
