Black Panther Party Founded

Founded on October 15, 1966, the Black Panther Party advocated for armed self-defense against police brutality and established community programs including free breakfast programs for children and health clinics.

Nelson Mandela Wins Nobel Peace Prize

On October 15, 1993, Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work in ending apartheid peacefully. The joint award recognized both men's commitment to negotiation over violence.

Stagecoach Mary Fields Born

Born circa 1832, Mary Fields was known as "Stagecoach Mary" for driving the mail coach in Montana. Standing six feet tall and reportedly tough enough to fight off wolves, she was the second woman and first African American woman to carry U.S. mail.
