South Africa Holds First Democratic Election

On April 27, 1994, South Africans of all races voted together for the first time. Nelson Mandela and the ANC won a decisive victory, ending centuries of white minority rule. The day is now celebrated as Freedom Day in South Africa.

Coretta Scott King Born

Born April 27, 1927, Coretta Scott King was a central figure in the civil rights movement. After her husband's assassination, she founded the King Center.
