Nelson Mandela Born

Born on July 18, 1918, Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison for his fight against apartheid before becoming South Africa's first Black president in 1994. His leadership in the transition from apartheid to democracy earned him the Nobel Peace Prize and made him a global icon of resistance and reconciliation.
