Denmark Vesey's Planned Slave Revolt Discovered

In May 1822, Denmark Vesey, a formerly enslaved man who had purchased his freedom, organized what would have been one of the largest slave revolts in U.S. history in Charleston, South Carolina. The plot was discovered, and Vesey and 34 others were executed. The event led to harsher slave codes across the South.
