Chester Himes Born

Born July 29, 1909, Chester Himes created the fictional Harlem detectives Coffin Ed Johnson and Grave Digger Jones. His novel "If He Hollers Let Him Go" (1945) exposed racism in wartime America. He spent much of his career in France, where his work was more widely appreciated.
