November 27, 1897

Marian Anderson Born

On November 27, 1897, Marian Anderson was born in Philadelphia. She became one of the most celebrated singers of the twentieth century. In 1939, after being denied Constitution Hall, she performed a legendary concert at the Lincoln Memorial before 75,000 people. In 1955, she became the first African American to perform at the Metropolitan Opera.
