Buffalo Soldiers Established

On July 28, 1866, Congress passed legislation establishing six all-Black regiments in the U.S. Army. These soldiers, who became known as Buffalo Soldiers, served with distinction in the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, and both World Wars. The nickname was given by Native Americans as a mark of respect.
