Ralph Bunche Wins Nobel Peace Prize
On December 10, 1950, Ralph Bunche received the Nobel Peace Prize for his successful mediation of the 1949 Armistice Agreements between Israel and the Arab states. He was also a key figure in the founding of the United Nations.
Mandela Signs South African Constitution
On December 10, 1996, Nelson Mandela signed the new South African Constitution at Sharpeville, the site of the 1960 massacre. The constitution included one of the world's most comprehensive bills of rights, prohibiting discrimination on grounds of race, gender, and sexual orientation.
