December 9, 1961

Tanzania Gains Independence

On December 9, 1961, Tanganyika became independent with Julius Nyerere as its first prime minister. Nyerere, known as "Mwalimu" (Teacher), advocated for African socialism and Pan-Africanism. Tanganyika merged with Zanzibar in 1964 to form Tanzania.

Stacey Abrams Born

Born December 9, 1973, Stacey Abrams served as minority leader in the Georgia House of Representatives and ran for governor in 2018. Her voter registration and protection work through Fair Fight Action is credited with helping flip Georgia in the 2020 presidential election.
