Juan Garrido Participates in Conquest of Tenochtitlan
Juan Garrido was a free Black man, likely born in the Kongo Kingdom, who traveled to the Americas and participated in several Spanish expeditions including the conquest of Tenochtitlan in 1521. He later settled in Mexico City, where he is credited with being the first person to plant and harvest wheat in the Americas. His life challenges simplistic narratives about race in the colonial period.
