August 14, 1827

Russwurm and Cornish Publish Freedom's Journal

On March 16, 1827, John Brown Russwurm and Samuel Cornish published the first issue of Freedom's Journal. It was the first newspaper owned and operated by African Americans. The paper advocated for abolition and documented the achievements and struggles of Black Americans.
