Shirley Chisholm Elected to Congress

On November 5, 1968, Shirley Chisholm was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from New York's 12th congressional district, becoming the first African American woman in Congress. She served seven terms and in 1972 became the first Black candidate to seek a major party's nomination for President of the United States.

November 5, 1919

Black Star Line Launched

On November 5, 1919, the S.S. Yarmouth, the first ship of Marcus Garvey's Black Star Line, set sail from New York to Jamaica. The shipping line represented Garvey's vision of Black economic independence and Pan-African unity. Though the venture ultimately failed financially, it inspired millions.
