Marcus Garvey Born

Born on August 17, 1887, Marcus Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and became one of the most influential Black nationalist leaders. His Back-to-Africa movement inspired millions worldwide. Garvey's ideas about Black pride and self-determination influenced later civil rights leaders and the Black Power movement.
