Sojourner Truth Born

Born circa 1797, Sojourner Truth escaped slavery in 1826 and became one of the most powerful orators of the 19th century. Her "Ain't I a Woman?" speech (1851) challenged prevailing notions about race and gender, and she fought for both abolition and women's suffrage.
