Henry Louis Gates Jr. Born

Henry Louis Gates Jr. was born on September 16, 1950, in Keyser, West Virginia. He became one of the most prominent scholars of African American studies, directing the Hutchins Center at Harvard. His PBS series on genealogy and his encyclopedia of African American life have made Black history accessible to millions.
