Fugitive Slave Act Debates Intensify

In March 1850, heated congressional debates over the Fugitive Slave Act intensified. The law, part of the Compromise of 1850, required citizens to assist in the capture of runaway enslaved people and denied fugitives the right to a jury trial, deepening national divisions over slavery.
