Jesse Owens Dies

On March 31, 1980, Jesse Owens died of lung cancer at age 66. Despite his Olympic triumphs, he returned to a segregated America and faced financial difficulties. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976 and the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously in 1990.

Nipsey Hussle Murdered in Los Angeles

On March 31, 2019, Ermias Joseph Asghedom (Nipsey Hussle) was shot and killed at age 33 outside his Marathon Clothing store in the Crenshaw neighborhood. Beyond music, he had invested heavily in his community, creating jobs and a co-working space. His death prompted a public memorial attended by 21,000 people.
