March 22, 1941

Tuskegee Airmen Established

In March 1941, the 99th Pursuit Squadron was activated at Chanute Field in Illinois before moving to Tuskegee Army Air Field. The Tuskegee Airmen flew over 15,000 sorties during World War II and earned more than 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses.

Slavery Abolished in Puerto Rico

On March 22, 1873, Spain abolished slavery in Puerto Rico, freeing approximately 29,000 enslaved people of African descent. This marked a significant step in the abolition of slavery in the Caribbean.
