Red Summer Begins

The Red Summer of 1919 saw racial violence erupt across the country, with major incidents in Chicago, Washington D.C., and Elaine, Arkansas. Returning Black WWI veterans who demanded equal treatment and the Great Migration contributed to white resentment. Hundreds of African Americans were killed.

Obama Delivers Keynote at DNC

On July 27, 2004, Illinois state senator Barack Obama delivered a keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in Boston. His speech, with its vision of a united America, electrified the convention and made him a political star. He was elected to the U.S. Senate three months later.
