Mary McLeod Bethune Born

Born on July 10, 1875, Mary McLeod Bethune founded the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute (later Bethune-Cookman University) and served as an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She was the founder and president of the National Council of Negro Women and a powerful advocate for education and racial equality.

Mavis Staples Born

Born July 10, 1939, Mavis Staples performed with her family group the Staple Singers, whose hits included "I'll Take You There" and "Respect Yourself." The group performed at civil rights rallies and was close to Martin Luther King Jr. She continues to record and perform.
