Whitney Houston Born

Born August 9, 1963, Whitney Houston's powerful voice made her one of the most awarded artists in history. Her rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV (1991) is considered the greatest live performance of the anthem. She had seven consecutive #1 hits.

Abner Louima Brutalized by Police

On August 9, 1997, Abner Louima was arrested and beaten by New York City police officers, then brutally assaulted in a station bathroom. Officer Justin Volpe was sentenced to 30 years in prison. The case became a national symbol of police brutality.
