Matthew Henson Born

Born August 8, 1866, Matthew Henson was an expert navigator, craftsman, and dog sled driver who accompanied Robert Peary on seven Arctic expeditions. He was likely the first person to stand at the North Pole. His contributions were largely unrecognized during his lifetime.
