August 10, 1820

Missouri Compromise Enacted

On March 3, 1820, Congress passed the Missouri Compromise, attempting to maintain the balance between slave and free states. It temporarily quieted the debate over slavery but was later declared unconstitutional in the Dred Scott decision of 1857.
