Matthew Henson Reaches the North Pole

On April 6, 1909, Matthew Henson and Robert Peary, along with four Inuit companions, reached what they believed to be the North Pole. Henson, who had been on seven Arctic expeditions with Peary, planted the flag. His contributions were largely unrecognized during his lifetime.
