Birmingham Campaign Begins

Beginning April 3, 1963, the campaign used nonviolent direct action including sit-ins, marches, and boycotts. Police Commissioner Bull Connor's use of fire hoses and dogs against protesters was broadcast nationally, building support for civil rights legislation.
