Central High School Crisis Begins
On September 4, 1957, the Arkansas National Guard blocked the Little Rock Nine from entering Central High School. The crisis led to President Eisenhower federalizing the National Guard and sending the 101st Airborne to escort the students.
Richard Wright Born
Born September 4, 1908, Richard Wright wrote "Native Son" (1940) and "Black Boy" (1945), which brought the reality of racial oppression to mainstream American literature. He later expatriated to France.
