September 20, 1830

First National Negro Convention

On September 20, 1830, the first National Negro Convention convened at Mother Bethel AME Church in Philadelphia. Led by Bishop Richard Allen, delegates from multiple states discussed colonization, abolition, and the condition of free Black people in America.

John Henry's Contest

The legend of John Henry, set around 1870 during the construction of the Big Bend Tunnel, tells of a Black steel-driver who raced against a steam-powered rock drilling machine. He won the contest but died with his hammer in his hand. The story became one of America's most enduring folk tales.
