Emmett Till's Body Recovered

On September 2, 1955, the body of 14-year-old Emmett Till was recovered from the Tallahatchie River in Mississippi. His mother Mamie Till-Bradley insisted on an open-casket funeral, and the shocking images galvanized the civil rights movement nationwide.

Romare Bearden Born

Born September 2, 1911, Romare Bearden became one of the most important American artists of the 20th century. His collages depicted the texture of African American life — from the rural South to the urban North — and drew on jazz, blues, and African art traditions.
