Artis Gilmore Born

Born March 21, 1856, Henry Ossian Flipper became the first African American to graduate from West Point in 1877. He served in the 10th Cavalry (Buffalo Soldiers) and later became a mining engineer and translator. He was posthumously pardoned by President Clinton in 1999.
