Birmingham Campaign Agreement

On May 10, 1963, after weeks of dramatic protests including the use of fire hoses and police dogs against children, an agreement was reached in Birmingham, Alabama. The accord called for desegregation of lunch counters, restrooms, and drinking fountains, and fairer hiring practices.

P.B.S. Pinchback Becomes First Black Governor

Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback was born free on May 10, 1837, in Macon, Georgia. During Reconstruction, he became lieutenant governor of Louisiana and briefly served as governor from December 1872 to January 1873, making him the first person of African descent to serve as governor of a U.S. state.

Harold C. Johnson became the first African American to graduate from Clemson University in South Carolina.
