Juneteenth: Emancipation Reaches Texas

On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger read federal orders in Galveston that all enslaved people in Texas were free. This day, known as Juneteenth, has been celebrated by African Americans since the late 1800s and became a federal holiday in 2021. It represents the belated fulfillment of the promise of emancipation.
