Althea Gibson Wins Wimbledon

On July 6, 1957, Althea Gibson defeated Darlene Hard to win the Wimbledon women's singles title. She was the first Black athlete to win a Grand Slam tennis event and was named Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year in 1957 and 1958.

Philando Castile Killed During Traffic Stop

On July 6, 2016, Philando Castile was shot and killed by officer Jeronimo Yanez during a traffic stop. His girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, livestreamed the aftermath on Facebook, and the video was viewed millions of times. The shooting intensified the national conversation about police violence against Black Americans.
