James Baldwin Dies

On December 1, 1987, James Baldwin died at age 63. His novels, essays, and plays — including "The Fire Next Time" and "Notes of a Native Son" — remain essential readings on race, identity, and justice in America. He spent much of his life as an expatriate in France.

Birth of Zaila Avant-garde

Zaila Avant-garde was born, later becoming the first African American to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2021.
