Toni Morrison Dies

On August 5, 2019, Toni Morrison died at Montefiore Medical Center in New York. Her novels — including "Beloved," "Song of Solomon," and "The Bluest Eye" — explored the Black American experience with unparalleled depth. She was the first African American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1993).

Shirley Ann Jackson Born

Born August 5, 1946, Shirley Ann Jackson earned her PhD in theoretical elementary particle physics from MIT in 1973. Her research at Bell Laboratories contributed to the development of the portable fax, touch-tone telephone, solar cells, and fiber optic cables. She later became president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
