August 31, 1962

Trinidad and Tobago Independence

On August 31, 1962, Trinidad and Tobago became independent under the leadership of Eric Williams, a historian and political leader. Williams, who wrote "Capitalism and Slavery," served as prime minister until his death in 1981. The twin-island nation has a rich African and Indian heritage.
