Wilma Rudolph Wins Three Olympic Golds

On September 7, 1960, Wilma Rudolph won her third gold medal at the Rome Olympics. Having overcome polio as a child, she became the fastest woman in the world and used her fame to push for desegregation of public facilities in her hometown of Clarksville, Tennessee.

Jacob Lawrence Born

Born September 7, 1917, Jacob Lawrence created "The Migration Series" (1941), a 60-panel painting cycle documenting the Great Migration of African Americans from the South to the North. He was the first Black artist to be represented by a major New York gallery.
