September 29, 1966

Botswana Gains Independence

On September 30, 1966, Botswana became independent under President Seretse Khama. Khama's marriage to a white English woman in 1948 had caused a diplomatic crisis between Britain and apartheid South Africa. Under his leadership, Botswana became one of Africa's most stable democracies.
