First Black Mayor of Major U.S. City

On November 7, 1967, Carl Stokes was elected mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. He and Richard Hatcher (elected in Gary, Indiana, the same day) became the first African Americans to lead major U.S. cities. Stokes used his position to advocate for urban renewal and minority employment.
