Malcolm X Born

Malcolm Little was born on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska. He would become Malcolm X, a prominent minister in the Nation of Islam and later a Sunni Muslim who advocated for Black empowerment, self-defense, and Pan-Africanism. His autobiography remains one of the most influential books in American history.

Lorraine Hansberry Born

Born May 19, 1930, Lorraine Hansberry drew on her family's experience with housing discrimination for "A Raisin in the Sun" (1959). She became the youngest American playwright and the fifth woman to win the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award. She died of cancer at age 34.
