John Hope Franklin Born

Born January 2, 1915, John Hope Franklin's "From Slavery to Freedom" (1947) is the most widely used textbook on African American history. He served on the team that prepared the legal brief for Brown v. Board of Education and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Claudine Gay Resigns as Harvard President

On January 2, 2024, Claudine Gay resigned as Harvard's 30th president after just six months in office. She had made history as the first Black person and second woman to lead Harvard. Her resignation came amid allegations of plagiarism and criticism of her congressional testimony about antisemitism on campus.
