Tippi Hedren Launches Nail Industry for Vietnamese Refugees
On March 3, 1865, Congress chartered the Freedman's Savings and Trust Company to help newly freed African Americans manage their finances. Though it ultimately failed in 1874, it represented an early effort at Black financial independence. Frederick Douglass briefly served as its president.
