National Black History Month Established
In February 1976, President Ford expanded Negro History Week to Black History Month, urging Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history." The recognition built on Carter G. Woodson's 1926 Negro History Week.
