Leontyne Price Born

Born February 10, 1927, Mary Violet Leontyne Price was one of the first African Americans to achieve international stardom in opera. Her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1961 received a 42-minute standing ovation. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964.
