Queen Nzinga Begins Resistance Against Portuguese

Queen Ana Nzinga Mbande of the Ndongo and Matamba kingdoms (in modern-day Angola) was a brilliant military strategist and diplomat who fought Portuguese colonial expansion and the slave trade for over 30 years. She formed alliances with the Dutch and neighboring kingdoms, personally led troops in battle, and established a kingdom that remained independent during her lifetime.

Claudia Rankine Born

Born in 1963, Claudia Rankine is a poet, essayist, and playwright. Her book "Citizen: An American Lyric" (2014) explored everyday racism through poetry and visual art, winning the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry and becoming a bestseller.
